About me
A bit about my values and interests
Hi, I’m Nathan. I’m a Software Engineer and hobbyist musician from New Zealand.
Here are a few of the things that I find important in life:
Values
playfulness, curiosity, simplicity, humility, connection.
Interests
Music
Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I play guitar, and I really enjoy listening to new music.
Epistemology
How do we know what we know? Epistemology is the study of knowledge - its nature, sources, and limits. It’s the foundation beneath every other inquiry. To me, learning about epistemology creates a sense of epistemic humility. It becomes obvious that we don’t know all that we think we know. And it makes what we do “know” - our best explanations - all the more precious.
Consciousness
The fundamental mystery of subjective experience. To illustrate what I mean by consciousness - take a second to observe your visual field, all at once. Try to do so with a beginner’s mind. What is it made of? To me this is a great mystery, up there with classics like “why is there something rather than nothing?”
Humane Technology
Technology that serves human flourishing rather than exploiting human vulnerabilities. Design that respects attention, supports autonomy, and strengthens rather than fractures community. A commitment to building tools that align with what we actually value.
